doxa_bc-yukon-community-newspapersFrom May 22 – 31, the DOXA Documentary Film Festival comes to Vancouver. Continuing its tradition of showcasing stories that aren’t often told, the 2009 DOXA Festival promises to bring premieres of eye-opening and unexpected films from Canada and around the world.

The BCYCNA is particularly interested in “Here Are The News,” a Canadian film by Cathleen Smith, which offers an intriguing look into the accomplishments of Yukon journalist Edith Josie. Miss Josie is from the Gwitchin group of Athabasca Indians who range from the Northwest Territories to the Yukon and Alaska. She started writing columns for the Whitehorse Star in 1953 and, over the next several decades, became such an iconic cultural figure that she was featured in Life Magazine and on CBC’s Front Page Challenge. Her columns were eventually collected into a best-selling book in the Yukon, also called Here Are the News.

In Edith Josie’s world, she simply reported events as she saw them. But, for outsiders, she opened doors to Old Crow, her tiny village of 300 people, 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

The film will be shown on Wednesday May 27, 3pm at Pacific Cinémathèque, Vancouver. Two tickets are up for grabs to the first BCYCNA member who emails kerry@bccommunitynews.com with the subject line “Here Are The News.”
